Since 2014 Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture Awards have recognised the excellence of farmers who consistently supply quality stock to meet consumers’ needs.

The Plate to Pasture Awards give us the opportunity to recognise our farmers who live and breathe food and understand what their consumers want from quality red meat and the people who produce it.

This year we are running a series of regional dinners hosting the category winners of lamb, prime beef, bull beef and deer in each of our Silver Fern Farms regions.

The overall winner of the Plate to Pasture Award will be announced at the Farmer Conference where we will also celebrate the skill and expertise of all of our regional winners.

Each of our regional winners will receive a $2,500 Plate to Pasture NZ Market Experience where they will meet our customers and consumers.

The finalists are chosen from our six regions:

  • Northland
  • Waikato/Bay of Plenty
  • Western North Island
  • Eastern North Island
  • Upper South Island
  • Lower South Island

We find the top 10 farms in each stock category based on the following criteria from supply information from the 2017 year.

  • Specification and presentation

  • Shareholding in the co-operative

  • Supply timing (with a weighting for being able to supply in times when we need stock for customers’ chilled programmes)

  • Supply volume

  • Supplying direct through their Silver Fern Farms Livestock Representative

  • Loyalty over multiple seasons

  • Farm Assurance status

How do we find our Plate to Pasture Award winner for 2018?

Each of our 6 Regional Winners will have a judging panel visit their farms for 2-3 hours to look at how they farm with the consumer in mind.

The judging panel asks questions covering farm policy, strategy and governance, people development, environmental management, and importantly – consumer awareness. A food people challenge is also included in the judging, which tests how well the finalists prepare and present a red meat dish.
