Silver Fern Farms Limited submitted to the Environment Select Committee on the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill.

You can download the submission here.

We support the Bill’s goal of establishing a framework to reduce New Zealand’s emissions to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

We have concerns with aspects of the mechanisms and targets proposed to achieve this goal and requested the committee to consider our following recommendations. Specifically:

  1. The targets for methane reductions
  2. The inability for farmers to off-set the warming effects of biogenic methane through on-farm carbon sequestration
  3. The netting of long-lived gases (CO2) from fossil fuel emitters only and land-use change to forestry in regions
  4. The processor-level point of obligation for farm emissions.
