Our role as a responsible food producer is to ensure we sustain the communities we are part of.

Our people are active in their regional communities as volunteers supporting Rural Fire Brigades, Ambulances and Rescue Squads. We also contribute in times of great need. Our customers, staff and farmers donated $891,642.93 to the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal.

Following a fire which destroyed our Te Aroha plant in 2010 together with our local farmer-suppliers we contributed to a dedicated Te Aroha Community Fund. Over the course of the plant rebuild $500,000 was raised for a new local community events centre. The employment of 380 local people in Silver Fern Farms new plant was also welcome news to the Te Aroha community.

Our Food People

ORA – Health & Safety and a Zero Harm Workplace

We employ in excess of 7,000 people at peak season, with the vast majority in our food production facilities. These facilities are complex, as are the processes and the risks. Our target is a ZERO harm workplace. We are committed to achieving this goal and then maintaining that level.

Our health and safety programme is called ‘Ora’. Ora means life, health, vitality, and wellbeing in Te Reo Maori, and we believe that is what is most important for all of us at Silver Fern Farms. Read more about our Health and Safety programme.

Training and Workplace Education

An employee one-on-one coaching programme operates throughout the company to improve communication and to lift overall company performance through people.

To support our company goals, our staff work through a series of modular training programmes from introductory through to advanced levels of skill within the workforce. These training modules can be built up into formal qualifications, which are nationally recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and in many overseas countries.

Our Farmers and Our Rural Communities

100% Local - Our Plant footprint

We are proud of our network of plants across the country which provide a convenient service to our farmers in their local communities. With 7,000 employees working across our plant network we are a major local employer. We rely heavily on people in regional communities to deliver on our 100% local service promise.
